Flight to Lima, Peru:

After two years of college I have yet to find anything as intoxicating as a full moon at 30,00 feet. I was entranced, to say the least. As the moon sailed over its very own sea of clouds, it was accompanied by the soothing sounds of Adele, Tracy Chapman, and Lady A orchestrating an unpredictable cloud-top current. The sight gave a whole new meaning to the term “high tide”. Staring below I traced the landscape, watching the illuminated houses and buildings as if they were fireflies participating in some sort of choreographed firefly ballet; dancing up and down the rolling hills and winding around the mountains.

My trance was often broken by a charmingly flirtatious young male flight attendant who felt the need to call me sweetheart and refill my glass of water at every chance he got… That and the 45 shirtless scenes Taylor Lautner, and the rolling hills that are his abdominals, had in Eclipse, the in-flight movie.

Nearing the end of the flight I was able to acquaint myself with a few of the passengers sitting around me. I feel so blessed to be given the opportunity to learn the stories of these amazing people. One, a American pastor and missionary from Cape Coral on his way to build a church in Chile, another was an older Peruvian gentleman traveling with his family to Lima. This is the first time he would return to Peru in 12 years and aside from skype, this was the first time his two daughters would ever meet their grandmother. And lastly a Spanish soccer player that had recently graduated from a D3 university in Boston in which he played. I was most jealous of him! He was on the brink of hiking Manchu Pichu and backpacking throughout South America with a friend.

I finally landed in Bolivia around 3am, after a 2 hour delay in Lima. Immediately as I stepped onto the tarmac in El Alto, my chest and lungs were affected by the 13,500 ft altitude. El Alto is not only this funky little plateau above La Paz, but it also where we will be holding the Level Playing Field camp. Surprisingly enough, I’m not sure if it was the fatigue or the comfort I felt connecting with a friendly LPF representative, but my nerves were finally calmed and my excited began to accumulate! I can’t wait to discover what the days to come have in store for me!
